The church we chose to abandon has innumerable stories behind it and has a history which is quite old. Serving as a church from the 18th century, it acted as an important focal point for the community through worship, social gatherings, and events. The church architecture is a mark of devotion its builders had, as it had stained glass windows, towering spires, and wooden adornments throughout the interior. It served a community system for the people residing in the town and provided them with spiritual unity. 

Over time, the church never ceased to be an important hub for the local families and acted as a church which organized marriages, christening, and funerals for several families. It was also central to a number of other historical occurrences, like providing shelter during wars or helping people in distress. Unfortunately, with time, the church started facing reduced amounts of visitors and donations which marked the slow decline and eventual abandonment of the church. Even though it is now in ruins, the church still manages to be the symbol of the town’s identity and culture, with numerous residents cherishing the memories they associate with it.

Reasons for Abandonment

The church was abandoned because of a variety reasons. One of the community members cited religious beliefs and practices as the primary reason. As people moved toward contemporary lifestyles, a good number of the individuals stopped attending normal church sessions. Widespread disengagement eroded finances and the operational capability of the church. 

Furthermore, changing population demographics along with moving population contributed towards the abandonment of the church. The elderly parishioners were slowly disappearing, and with the shifting young adult workforce, there was no financial or physical support towards the services. Eventually, build up of natural calamities along with lack of repair resulted in its stopping of use.

The windows also capture an additional sparkle from sunlight which enhances the appearance of the church even further. Although most of the outward elements of the site are beautiful, they do not encapsulate the grandeur hidden in the interiors. Due to the damage caused over the years, the shining altar is tarnished, and the lecture halls are immensely dusty. 

The setbacks caused by time do not solely take beauty away, but can reveal hidden treasures. Even if this church does not go down in history for preserving an intricate design or symbolism, it quickly made its way into the film and photograph industry as an undercover gem. Aspects such as symmetry, detailing, angles, and overall composition allowed for magnificent pieces to be produced. Even today, the building serves multiple purposes such as telling spine chills legends as well as sparking the imagination of many. Although the structure does not fulfill its primary role, it no doubt retains the affection of the public.

The forlorn church has been left to ruin, the beauty stealing facade long cracking and peeling, stained glass windows rusting over. Their splendor long gone to be replaced with muted tones of gray.
